Where it came from
Offchain Labs was founded in 2018 by Ed Felten, a Princeton professor who had served as deputy chief technology officer of the United States, with two of his doctoral students. Arbitrum launched in 2021 and the token followed in a 2023 airdrop that handed governance to users rather than selling it.
What it does
Arbitrum is an optimistic rollup: it executes transactions off the Ethereum main chain, posts the results, and assumes they are correct unless someone proves otherwise within a challenge window. That assumption is what makes it cheap, and the challenge window is what makes withdrawals slow.
What moves the price
- Transaction volume on the rollup against the cost of posting data to Ethereum, which is the margin the network actually earns.
- The price of Ethereum blobspace, since data posting is the dominant cost and a change there moves rollup economics directly.
- Treasury decisions by the DAO, which controls a very large token allocation and has repeatedly voted on how to deploy it.
- Unlocks to investors and the core team from the original distribution.
- Progress on permissionless fraud proofs, since until challenges are open to anyone the security argument depends on a trusted set.
