Where it came from

StarkWare was founded in 2018 by Eli Ben-Sasson and colleagues who had invented STARK proofs, a way to prove a computation was done correctly without revealing or repeating it. Starknet is their general-purpose chain built on that work, launched in 2021 with the token following in 2024.

What it does

Starknet is a validity rollup. Instead of assuming transactions are correct and allowing challenges, it proves them cryptographically and posts the proof, so there is no challenge window and withdrawals do not have to wait days. It uses its own language, Cairo, rather than Solidity.

What moves the price

  • Proving cost per transaction, which falls as more transactions are batched into one proof and is the central economic variable of this design.
  • The requirement to use Cairo, which is a real barrier to porting existing Ethereum applications and shapes how fast the ecosystem grows.
  • Large scheduled unlocks from the 2024 distribution to investors and contributors.
  • Adoption by applications needing fast finality, which is the specific advantage validity proofs buy over optimistic rollups.
