Where it came from
Zcash launched in 2016 out of academic cryptography work by researchers including Matthew Green and Eli Ben-Sasson, and was the first practical deployment of zero-knowledge proofs in a production cryptocurrency. Its launch ceremony, designed so that no single participant could compromise the setup, is still cited as a landmark in applied cryptography.
What it does
Zcash is a proof-of-work chain with the same supply schedule as Bitcoin and optional shielded transactions. A shielded transfer proves it is valid without revealing sender, recipient or amount. Transparent transactions also exist, and the split between the two is a persistent design tension.
