Where it came from

Evan Duffield launched this in January 2014 as XCoin, renamed it Darkcoin, and renamed it again to Dash in 2015 as the focus moved from privacy to payments. Its lasting contribution is structural: it introduced the masternode, a second tier of servers that post collateral in exchange for a share of block rewards and a vote on funding.

What it does

Dash is a proof-of-work payment chain with a masternode layer that provides instant settlement and optional coin mixing. A portion of every block reward goes to a treasury that masternode operators allocate by vote, so the network funds its own development without a foundation.

What moves the price

  • The masternode collateral requirement, a fixed number of coins that must be locked to operate one, which removes a substantial share of supply from circulation.
  • The self-funded treasury, which pays for development from block rewards and is directed by on-chain vote.
  • Payment adoption in the markets it has focused on, particularly in Latin America.
  • Exchange listing risk from its optional mixing feature, which places it in the same regulatory category as privacy coins in some jurisdictions.
