Where it came from

Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer created Dogecoin in December 2013 as a joke about the proliferation of cryptocurrencies, using a Shiba Inu meme that was popular that year. It took two weeks to build. Both founders later distanced themselves from it, and it has outlived almost every serious project launched alongside it.

What it does

Dogecoin is a proof-of-work payment chain forked from Litecoin. Its one substantive difference from Bitcoin is monetary: there is no supply cap and a fixed number of new coins is issued every year, so the inflation rate falls over time without ever reaching zero. That makes it mildly inflationary by design rather than deflationary.

What moves the price

  • Attention. This asset has no cash flow and no protocol revenue, so its price responds to public mention, which is a mechanism even if it is not a fundamental one.
  • Merged mining with Litecoin, which means it shares a security budget with a larger chain and its hashrate does not depend on its own price alone.
  • Payment integrations by consumer platforms, which are the only recurring non-speculative demand it has ever had.
  • Fixed annual issuance, which adds a constant number of coins each year regardless of demand.

A historical frequency, not a probability. It counts how often the move happened in the last three years of daily closes; a change in regime breaks it. Market prices are live and move. 7 more open markets on this coin do not name a price level.

Historical frequency, other venues, options

How often this coin has actually covered each of these distances in a window of that length, what Kalshi charges for the same question, and for bitcoin and ether what the options market implies.

Included with Pro+

The market price says what traders charge. The base rate says how often it has happened. Seeing both in one row is the whole point.
