Where it came from
Charles Hoskinson, one of the eight founders who started Ethereum, left that project in 2014 after a disagreement over whether it should be a commercial company. Cardano was his answer, launched in 2017 and built by IOHK on an explicit rule that protocol changes are published as peer-reviewed papers before they are written as code. That rule explains both the reputation for rigour and the reputation for slowness.
What it does
Cardano is a proof-of-stake settlement and smart-contract chain. It uses an extended UTXO accounting model rather than Ethereum's account model, which makes the outcome of a transaction predictable before it is submitted, and Ouroboros, a consensus protocol with a formal security proof.
What moves the price
- The share of ADA delegated to stake pools. Delegated ADA is not locked and can be spent at any time, so participation reflects holder intent rather than a contract, but it still describes how much supply sits with people not trading it.
- Protocol upgrades ship as scheduled hard forks through the hard fork combinator, so delivery dates are public well in advance and slipping one is a visible event.
- Treasury withdrawals through on-chain governance, which fund development from a share of transaction fees and reserve emissions rather than from a company balance sheet.
- Monetary expansion from the remaining reserve, which pays staking rewards and shrinks by a fixed proportion each epoch, so issuance falls on a published curve.
