Base chains
Layer 1 blockchains
A layer 1 is a chain that settles its own transactions: it has its own validators, its own security budget, and its own fee market. Everything else in crypto either runs on one of these or bridges between them.
The trade-off every layer 1 makes is the same one, in different proportions: throughput against decentralisation against cost. A chain that processes thousands of transactions a second is usually asking fewer machines to agree, and a chain that asks tens of thousands of machines to agree is usually slower and more expensive.
Where these chains show up in prediction markets is rarely the technology. It is the price threshold, the ETF approval, the network upgrade date, and — increasingly — the question of whether a given chain still exists in its current form a year out.
