Where it came from

ENS launched in 2017 out of the Ethereum Foundation and became independent, distributing its governance token in November 2021 to everyone who had registered a name. It solves an ordinary usability problem: a 42-character hex address is impossible to check by eye and easy to substitute.

What it does

ENS maps human-readable names to addresses and other records, with names registered for a period and renewed annually. Registration fees accrue to a treasury governed by token holders. The token is governance, not access: a name works whether or not its owner holds any.

What moves the price

  • Registration and renewal revenue, which is a genuine recurring fee stream denominated in dollars and paid in ETH.
  • Renewal rates on existing names, which show whether registrations were use or speculation.
  • Integration by wallets and applications, since a name is only worth registering where it resolves.
  • Treasury and governance decisions, which control a large token allocation and the fee schedule itself.
