Where it came from
Dapper Labs built CryptoKitties in 2017 and watched it congest Ethereum badly enough to make the point that consumer applications and a general-purpose chain were a poor fit. Flow was their answer, launched in 2020, and NBA Top Shot was its first mass-market test.
What it does
Flow splits the work of a validator across four specialised node roles, so verification can be decentralised without every node doing every job. The design goal is consumer scale: mainstream users buying digital collectibles with a card, without a wallet extension or a gas fee they must reason about.
What moves the price
- Activity from licensed intellectual property, which is the network's distinguishing asset and its concentration risk in the same breath.
- Staking lockups across the node roles, which require different minimum amounts and different commitment periods.
- Adoption of the EVM layer added later, which lets Ethereum applications deploy without rewriting in Cadence.
- The broader market for digital collectibles, which has proved far more cyclical than the network's technical capacity.
