Where it came from
Charlie Lee, then an engineer at Google, released Litecoin in October 2011 as a deliberate complement rather than a competitor to Bitcoin: same design, faster blocks, a memory-hard mining function chosen so that ordinary hardware could compete. It is the oldest altcoin still in continuous operation.
What it does
Litecoin is a payments-oriented proof-of-work chain with two-and-a-half-minute blocks and a supply cap four times Bitcoin's. It has often served as a testing ground for changes later adopted by Bitcoin, and it added an optional confidential transaction layer that Bitcoin does not have.
What moves the price
- The halving, which cuts the block subsidy every 840,000 blocks on a schedule known years ahead and squeezes miner revenue at a fixed point.
- Hashrate and miner economics, because the security budget comes almost entirely from issuance rather than fees.
- Payment processor and merchant support, which is the only demand channel that is specific to this asset rather than shared with Bitcoin.
- Its correlation to Bitcoin, which is high enough that most of its price movement is not about Litecoin at all.
