Base rates turn a price target into a frequency: how often a move that size has happened before.
Where it came from
Gavin Wood wrote the Ethereum Yellow Paper and served as its first chief technology officer. He left in 2016 and published the Polkadot paper the same year, arguing that the future was not one chain doing everything but many chains sharing one security guarantee. The network launched in 2020 under the Web3 Foundation.
What it does
A central relay chain provides finality and validator security; individual application chains connect to it and inherit that security rather than bootstrapping their own validator set. Messages move between them over a shared format, which is the part a bridge normally has to provide and normally gets wrong.
What moves the price
- How connected chains buy their access. The original parachain auctions locked DOT for the whole lease term; the later coretime model sells blockspace as a consumable instead, which changes the amount of DOT held off the market.
- The staking rate against the inflation schedule: rewards are set so that issuance falls as the staked proportion approaches its target, which links yield directly to participation.
- Treasury spending decided by on-chain referenda, which funds development from inflation and is visible before it happens.
- Delivery of core protocol upgrades, since the whole argument for the architecture is that shared security is worth giving up sovereignty for.
