Where it came from
Telegram designed this chain in 2018 and raised $1.7bn for it. The SEC sued, the settlement in 2020 forced Telegram to abandon the project, and an independent group of developers picked up the open-source code and continued it as The Open Network. Telegram is not the operator, but it is the distribution channel, and that relationship is the whole investment case.
What it does
TON is a sharded proof-of-stake chain designed for very high message throughput, with wallets and mini-applications embedded directly in a messenger used by hundreds of millions of people. It is the only major chain whose primary interface is not a browser extension.
What moves the price
- How deeply the chain is wired into Telegram: an in-app wallet, payments or a mini-app platform reaches users who never sought out a crypto product, and a change to that integration changes the addressable base overnight.
- Validator staking, which locks supply for a bonding period rather than leaving it liquid.
- Concentration of supply from the original mining distribution, which means a small number of addresses can move the float.
- Regulatory treatment of messenger-embedded payments, the same question that ended the first version of this project.
