Where it came from

Sunny Lu was chief information officer at Louis Vuitton China before founding VeChain in 2015. The problem he set out to solve was not financial: it was proving that a physical item is what it claims to be, as it moves through a supply chain, without every party trusting one database.

What it does

VeChain records product and logistics data on chain, usually paired with a physical tag. It uses two tokens on purpose: VET is the asset, and holding it generates VTHO, which pays for transactions. An enterprise that holds enough VET therefore has a predictable, non-volatile cost of using the network.

What moves the price

  • The VTHO generation and burn rates, which governance can change and which decide whether operating cost stays predictable for enterprise users.
  • Node tiers, which require holding specific VET amounts to qualify and so lock supply at defined thresholds.
  • Enterprise pilots converting into production deployments, which is the difference between a signed announcement and recurring fee revenue.
  • Regulatory pressure for supply-chain traceability, which creates the mandate that makes this category worth paying for.
