Base rates and derivatives positioning
How often this coin has actually managed a move of a given size in 30 days, and how the perpetual market is positioned right now.
Included with Pro+
Base rates turn a price target into a frequency: how often a move that size has happened before.
Where it came from
Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis published the Chainlink whitepaper in 2017, addressing a gap that is easy to overlook: a smart contract cannot see anything outside its own chain. Without a trusted way to learn a price, an interest rate or a match result, most useful contracts cannot be written at all.
What it does
Chainlink runs networks of independent node operators that report external data on chain and aggregate it, so no single source can move a contract's inputs. Its price feeds underpin a large share of lending and derivatives protocols, and its later work extends to cross-chain messaging.
What moves the price
- The value secured by its feeds, since a lending protocol relying on a price oracle is trusting it with the whole position.
- Fees paid for data and messaging services, and how much of that is paid in LINK rather than in other assets.
- Staking, which bonds tokens against the correctness of what node operators report and gives the security claim economic weight.
- Adoption of cross-chain messaging by institutions, which is the expansion beyond price feeds into a much larger market.

Levels below the price
A historical frequency, not a probability. It counts how often the move happened in the last three years of daily closes; a change in regime breaks it. Market prices are live and move.
Historical frequency, other venues, options
How often this coin has actually covered each of these distances in a window of that length, what Kalshi charges for the same question, and for bitcoin and ether what the options market implies.
Included with Pro+
The market price says what traders charge. The base rate says how often it has happened. Seeing both in one row is the whole point.
