Where it came from
Robert Leshner founded Compound in 2017. In June 2020 it began distributing its governance token to users of the protocol, which caused borrowing to spike overnight and started the practice now called liquidity mining. Much of what followed in decentralised finance dates from that decision.
What it does
Compound is an algorithmic lending market: supplied assets earn interest, borrowers post collateral, and rates adjust with utilisation. Later versions narrowed the design so that each market has a single borrowable asset, which makes the risk of each market easier to reason about.
What moves the price
- Utilisation across its markets, which sets rates on both sides.
- Governance proposals on collateral factors and rate curves, which holders vote on directly and which change the protocol's risk profile.
- The end of token distribution to users, which removed the subsidy that had inflated early activity.
- Competition from lending protocols with broader collateral support.
