Base rates and derivatives positioning
How often this coin has actually managed a move of a given size in 30 days, and how the perpetual market is positioned right now.
Included with Pro+
Base rates turn a price target into a frequency: how often a move that size has happened before.
Where it came from
Stani Kulechov started this in 2017 in Finland as ETHLend, a peer-to-peer lending marketplace that matched individual lenders to individual borrowers and was slow because of it. The 2020 rebuild abandoned matching for pooled liquidity and renamed the project Aave.
What it does
Aave is a lending pool. Depositors supply assets and earn a rate; borrowers post collateral and pay one. Rates move algorithmically with how much of the pool is borrowed, and positions are liquidated automatically when collateral falls below a threshold.
What moves the price
- Utilisation of the pools, which sets both borrowing and deposit rates through the interest rate curve.
- The safety module, where staked tokens act as a backstop against a shortfall and in exchange earn a share of protocol revenue.
- Collateral parameters set by governance, which decide what can be borrowed against and how aggressively.
- Liquidation events during sharp price moves, which are the moments that test whether the risk parameters were set correctly.

A historical frequency, not a probability. It counts how often the move happened in the last three years of daily closes; a change in regime breaks it. Market prices are live and move.
Historical frequency, other venues, options
How often this coin has actually covered each of these distances in a window of that length, what Kalshi charges for the same question, and for bitcoin and ether what the options market implies.
Included with Pro+
The market price says what traders charge. The base rate says how often it has happened. Seeing both in one row is the whole point.
