Where it came from
Jed McCaleb co-founded Ripple, left in 2013 after a disagreement about direction, and started Stellar in 2014 with Joyce Kim. The network was set up under a non-profit foundation rather than a company, and in 2019 that foundation burned more than half the total supply, a decision that remains one of the few of its kind.
What it does
Stellar is a payments network built around anchors: regulated institutions that issue a claim on a real currency and redeem it locally. A built-in order book converts between those claims, so a transfer can cross currencies in one operation without a bridge or a wrapped asset.
What moves the price
- Anchor and corridor activity, since the network only produces value where a licensed institution exists on both ends of a payment.
- Partnerships announced by the Stellar Development Foundation, which holds a large share of supply and funds integrations directly.
- Adoption of Soroban, the smart-contract environment added later, which extends the chain beyond payments.
- Central bank and remittance pilots, the category of user that the anchor model was specifically designed for.
