Where it came from
Michael Egorov launched Curve in 2020 with a formula tuned for one case: swapping between assets that should trade at the same price, like two dollar stablecoins. Concentrating liquidity near parity gave far better rates than a general-purpose pool, and made the protocol the default venue for stablecoin trading.
What it does
Curve is an exchange specialised in assets that track each other. Its more copied contribution is the vote-escrow model: locking the token for up to four years grants voting power that directs where new emissions go, so protocols compete to accumulate it.
What moves the price
- The proportion of supply locked and for how long, since escrow removes tokens from circulation on a schedule that only unwinds with time.
- Emissions directed by gauge votes, which is what other protocols pay for and the reason a market in vote-buying exists at all.
- Stablecoin trading volume, which is the underlying fee source.
- Depeg events, which are simultaneously this venue's busiest moments and its largest risk.
