Base rates and derivatives positioning
How often this coin has actually managed a move of a given size in 30 days, and how the perpetual market is positioned right now.
Included with Pro+
Base rates turn a price target into a frequency: how often a move that size has happened before.
Where it came from
Antonio Juliano, previously an engineer at Coinbase, founded dYdX in 2017. It became the largest decentralised derivatives venue while running on Ethereum, then in 2023 did something almost no protocol of that size has done: migrated off, onto its own purpose-built chain.
What it does
dYdX runs perpetual futures with an order book rather than a pooled formula, which is what professional traders expect. Moving to its own chain let the order book and matching run in the protocol itself instead of on a company's servers.
What moves the price
- Perpetual trading volume, which produces the fees distributed to stakers.
- Funding rates and open interest, which describe how the market is positioned and are the raw material this venue sells access to.
- Staking on its own chain, which secures the network and receives a share of trading fees.
- Regulatory treatment of derivatives venues, which is a sharper question for perpetuals than for spot trading.
