Where it came from
Lido launched in December 2020, days after Ethereum's staking contract opened, to solve the problem that staking required 32 ETH and locked it indefinitely. Pooling deposits and issuing a transferable receipt removed both constraints, and the service grew large enough that its own market share became a governance concern for Ethereum.
What it does
Lido stakes deposited ETH through professional operators and issues a token representing the staked position plus accrued rewards. That receipt can be traded or used as collateral, which is the entire point: staking without giving up the use of the capital.
What moves the price
- The total amount staked through the protocol and the fee taken on rewards, which is the revenue line.
- Ethereum's staking yield, which falls as more ETH is staked network-wide and is not something this protocol controls.
- Concentration concerns, since a single staking provider holding a large share of validators raises questions that have been debated in Ethereum governance for years.
- Competition from exchange staking and from other liquid staking protocols, which compete on fee and on how deeply the receipt token is integrated elsewhere.
