Where it came from
Yaniv Tal, Brandon Ramirez and Jannis Pohlmann founded The Graph in 2018 after repeatedly hitting the same problem while building applications: reading data from a blockchain is far harder than writing to it, because chains are optimised for consensus rather than for queries.
What it does
The Graph indexes blockchain data into queryable APIs called subgraphs. Indexers stake tokens to serve queries, curators signal which subgraphs matter, and delegators back indexers without running infrastructure themselves. Each role is paid from query fees.
What moves the price
- Query volume, which is the network's revenue and the thing that distinguishes it from a subsidised index.
- The migration from the hosted service to the decentralised network, which converted free queries into paid ones and was the real test of demand.
- Indexer staking and delegation, which lock tokens for an unbonding period.
- Issuance to indexers, which subsidises participation and dilutes holders until fees can carry it.
