Where it came from
Jae Kwon published the Tendermint consensus paper in 2014 and, with Ethan Buchman, built it into a toolkit for making application-specific chains. The mainnet launched in 2019. The thesis was the opposite of Ethereum's: rather than every application sharing one chain, every application should have its own and they should be able to talk.
What it does
The Cosmos Hub is one chain among many built with the same toolkit, connected by a standard message protocol. ATOM secures the hub itself and, through shared security arrangements, can be used to secure other chains that rent validators from it.
What moves the price
- The inflation schedule, which moves between a floor and a ceiling depending on how much ATOM is staked, so issuance rises when participation falls and vice versa.
- Adoption of shared security, which is the only mechanism that gives ATOM a claim on the revenue of the wider ecosystem rather than just the hub.
- Governance decisions on issuance, which holders have already used once to cut the inflation rate sharply.
- Cross-chain transfer volume, since a hub is worth what passes through it.

ATOM secures the hub itself and, through shared security arrangements, can be used to secure other chains that rent validators from it.
